| Something about our furniture : Most pieces shown in this web are between 80 and 120 years old . The furniture can be classfied as Chinese vernacular furniture , used by the majority of our population throughout our country and throughout our long history . Furniture and smaller objects were often beautifully decorated , either carved ,painted or decorated with engraved metal . Decoration depicted auspicious symbols , such as animals and flowers , Chinese characters , clouds , water and other Buddhist symbols . These images are also a common visual vocabulary throughout China , more readily understandable than writing , as most Chinese in the old society were illiterate . Most pieces in this web have their origin in rural China , in farmer's communities . Each piece is unique since it was hand made by local carpenters or by the owner himself .
